• Three-zone screws for plasticizing units in thermoplastic injection molding are assumed.
  • As the discharge volume per injection stroke, 1.5 times the calculated screw displacement volume is used. This displacement volume can be taken from the machine data for the injection unit currently in use (ISO).
  • The numerical values of the cycle time and the specific volume of the melt are required for the calculation.
  • For molding compounds with additives, the melt density can be calculated.
  • For the calculation of the required shot weight, the number of mold cavities and the part mass are necessary. It should be noted that, for family molds (multi-cavity molds with different parts), each associated part group is considered as one part.
  • Production-related material losses and runner system mass fractions are included approximately.
  • For the evaluation of unacceptable thermal material degradation, the ISO recommendation of a limit of approx. 6 minutes must be observed.
  • Reference values for the permissible residence time can be obtained from the injection molding machine manufacturer and/or the material supplier.
